Everything was a blur in my head

Photography Exhibition

"Everything was a blur in my head" is a photography exhibition, curated by a Lithuanian filmmaker and artist Monika Navickaitė. Featuring Monika’s contemporary photographs, shot on expired Soviet film, alongside her father’s, Arnoldas Navickas', archival images from Soviet Lithuania, the exhibition aims to create an intergenerational dialogue across time.

Through this juxtaposition, the exhibition explores the personal and political dimensions of memory, identity, and authoritarianism. Symbols and remnants of the past, Soviet-era architecture, monuments, and traces of everyday life, are overlaid with contemporary urban landscapes and political markers, reflecting how history persists, transforms, and collides with the present. In this act of remembering, Monika positions memory as a form of reflection, resistance, and inquiry, showing how the echoes of the past can help to inform a way forward.

The exhibition is free to visit, but the opening night event with the artist’s presentation is ticketed.

Accessibility

Level Access

There is a 5cm (2”) lip in front of the main entrance.

There is level access from the main entrance to all areas: the main gallery space, a second gallery room (“Room 2”), and a hallway leading to a utility room and bathroom.

The hallway which leads to the utility room and bathroom is narrow - 86cm (33”) wide.

Hearing

The gallery does not have a hearing loop system at present.

Visual

The main gallery space is lit by neutral/warm overhead spotlights. All other rooms are lit by very bright fluorescent lights. There is no high colour contrast inside the gallery. The walls are brilliant white and the floors are a light-toned natural wood.

Sensory

The lights in the hallway make a quiet humming sound.

The Gallery is situated on Albert Road, which is a quiet residential street. There is very little noise pollution. Pedestrian and public access is via Victoria Road, which is a pleasant but busy main road with shops, cafes and pubs.

The Gallery is 0.20 miles/0.32km from the entrance of Queens Park. The park gets busy on weekends and sunny days, but is very pleasant if you find green space helpful to self-regulate.

Sensory resources, including sensory toys, will be available during the event. An audio guide for the exhibition is also in development and visitors are welcome to bring their own headphones, whether to listen to the audio guide or to support a more comfortable sensory experience.
